New Limits for Drink DrivingNew Limits on Drink Driving

Since 28 October 2011 the blood alcohol limit for drink driving has been reduced from 80mg to 50 mg for all drivers with a further reduction to 20mg for learner drivers, newly qualified drivers (within 2 yrs of passing the driving test) and professional drivers such as bus, goods vehicle, and hackney/taxi drivers. A new fixed penalty system is now in place which allows fines and penalty points for experienced drivers for offences on the lower end of the scale. Disqualification and increased fines remain on the statute books for serious breaches and for inexperienced and professional drivers.
